How to stop imitation jewellery from turning black

Imitation jewellery turns black because the thin metal plating reacts with moisture, sweat, perfume and air. Nothing stops that permanently — plating is a coating, not the metal underneath. But four habits slow it down dramatically: put jewellery on last, take it off first, keep it dry, and store it airtight.
Why does it happen at all?
Fashion jewellery is a base metal with a thin decorative layer over it. Anything acidic or salty — sweat, perfume, deodorant, hairspray, cleaning products, chlorinated water — eats through that layer from the outside. Humid coastal air does it slowly even in a drawer. The blackening you see is the base metal showing through, which is why polishing hard makes it worse rather than better.
The four habits that matter
- Last on, first off. Jewellery goes on after perfume, moisturiser, hairspray and makeup have dried, and comes off before you cook, clean, exercise, shower or swim.
- Wipe it before it goes away. Ten seconds with a dry, soft cloth removes the sweat that would otherwise sit on it all week. Never put a damp piece into a box.
- Store it airtight and separate. A small zip pouch each, or a compartment box. Air is the slow enemy; other jewellery is the fast one, because chains scratch plating off studs.
- Keep it away from the bathroom. The most humid room in the house is the worst place to keep a jewellery box, and it is where most people keep one.
What about cleaning a piece that has already darkened?
Be gentler than you want to be. A dry microfibre cloth, or a barely damp one followed immediately by drying. Avoid toothpaste, baking soda, silver dip and ultrasonic cleaners — all of them are designed for solid metal and will take plating off. If the base metal is showing through in patches, the plating is gone and no cleaning will bring it back.
Which pieces last longest?
As a rule of thumb: the less it moves against your skin and the less it gets wet, the longer it keeps its finish. Earrings and pendants outlast rings and bracelets, which are constantly rubbing against hands, sleeves and desks. If you wear one piece daily, expect it to age faster than the rest — and buy it accordingly.
